GMO FREE ZONES IN POLAND

New Publication and Regional Coalition To Protect Against GMO Threat

The International Coalition to Protect the Polish Countryside launched it's latest publication 'You Have the Right to Know. If you don't want GMO, act now!' on the occasion of a conference held in the restaurant "Peasant Foods" in Krakow on September 15th 2006. The publication has been launched in the belief that widespread public awareness of the critical threat posed by GMO is crucial to the success of Poland maintaining it's recently gained status as a GMO Free Zone. We want to thank the anti-GMO international activists and organizations who have supplied photos and drawings for this publication.

Recent steps taken by the Polish government to ban the import of GMO seeds for agriculture and to do the same to GM animal feeds with effect from 2008, are to be applauded. However, this cannot disguise the fact that Poland is still subject to massive pressure to become part of the highly controversial GM experiment as well as to accept an increasing number of GM foods in shops and restaurants.

Local and regional actions play a key role in defending the integrity of the Polish food chain, as well as in the promotion of high quality local foods. The future of these foods now hangs in the balance - which led us to establish the MALOPOLSKA COALITION FOR A GMO FREE REGION, supported by fourteen organisations. This new coalition, whose chairman is Maria Malinowska-Malopolska board member (our long time partner) , will work to keep the region active in it's defense of it's GMO free status. We will inspire other regions to follow and establish similar coalitions.

"Poland's status as a GMO Free Zone is a vital factor in maintaining its worldwide reputation as a Country of natural beauty and unadulterated food. It is a priceless treasure which must be protected as the highest priority."

The conference and a publication (which is in Polish) was sponsored by Patagonia-Tides Foundation.
